Bespoken names
A blogger, Pok Ku, blogged about COMPANY COMPELLATIONS recently. Do read his blog.
He and his many blog readers jolted my memory to names of places. This blog is written for those who understand Malay, there's no point in me attempting to translate, the humour would have been lost.
In Sabah, there is this small town, outside the city of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. It's name is Menggatal. Now, that is NOT a Malay name. It probably came from local language, probably Kadazandusun, which means Mangga Gatal.
However with Malay being the national language and the rather large minority of non-Sabahans in that part of town due to employment by various federal government agencies and Universiti Malaysia Sabah in Kota Kinabalu, such a conversation happened between a man and a boy.
Man: Hello, abah ada?
Boy: Tiada, abah pergi Menggatal. Belum balik lagi.
Man: (dalam hati) Sampai hati dia bagi tau anaknya dia pergi menggatal.
This is another name of another place in Sabah.
There is a small town called Menumbok in Southwestern Sabah, before the advent of affordable air fares, people use to go to Brunei from Sabah by driving their cars onto a ferry which departs from Menumbok to Brunei. Everyday, children from the area would say, "Saya pergi ke Sekolah Menengah Menumbok."
Whilst I might be right on the origin of the name Menggatal, I am clueless on Menumbok. I doubt it meant fist fights.
Can anyone help? Does anybody know anymore such examples throughout the Malay speaking world?
